Access to DHEA Supplements in Jeopardy

Brief Synopsis:

Legislation (S.1137) was introduced by Senators Grassley, McCain and Allen that will end over-the-counter access to DHEA supplements. This legislation will most likely be offered as an amendment to other legislation to ease its passage. If S.1137 is passed, any supplements containing DHEA would only be available through a physician's order under the Controlled Substances Act.

The Metagenics Position:

This legislation is dangerous. It will restrict access to DHEA for many individuals who are currently experiencing health benefits from this supplement. Additionally, it provides ammunition to legislators who are anti-supplement and who want to question the safety of supplements under current law. This could lead to further restrictions to the access of safe and effective dietary supplements.

Metagenics has studied the science behind DHEA and supports its responsible use as a dietary supplement. We believe that the supporters of S.1137 don't have all the facts. The Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) has developed a position statement (DHEA Does Not Belong on a "Controlled Substances" List) to assist in providing the science to Congress.

What You Can Do:

Your urgent support is requested. Visit www.saveoursupplements.org and send a letter to your Senator or Congressperson (Enter your zip code in the box entitled "TELL CONGRESS TO SAVE OUR SUPPLEMENTS"). A sample letter is provided that you can customize if you would like to present your personal opinion.
