A fall wellness routine is mostly about adjusting what you are already doing to match shorter days and cooler weather. For most people that means three things. First, getting daylight early in the day, since light is the main signal your body clock runs on and morning light is what helps keep it anchored.1,2 Second, revisiting vitamin D, because as the sun sits lower in the sky there is a stretch of the year when your skin makes very little of it.3,4 Third, keeping the basics steady: regular meals, movement, sleep, and a daily multivitamin or foundational supplements if your diet has gaps. Small, consistent adjustments tend to hold up better through the season than a full overhaul in October.
Sunlight is the body’s main source of vitamin D, but as fall and winter arrive, shorter days and a lower sun angle reduce the skin’s ability to produce it. In northern regions, including Boston, very little vitamin D is made from sunlight between November and February.
To help maintain healthy vitamin D levels, focus on dietary sources such as fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods. Because vitamin D is naturally found in only a few foods, many people may benefit from supplementation. If you're unsure of your vitamin D status, a simple blood test can help you and your healthcare practitioner determine whether additional support is needed. Shop Vitamin D supplements
Shorter days mean less exposure to natural light, which helps regulate your body’s sleep-wake cycle. As sunlight decreases in the fall, your internal clock may shift, making it harder to feel alert during the day and easier to feel tired. Less daylight, combined with more time spent indoors, can leave mornings feeling especially challenging.
To help support energy levels, try getting outside within a few hours of waking, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, and limiting screen time before bed. However, ongoing fatigue is not always seasonal. Low iron, thyroid issues, and seasonal mood changes can also contribute. If tiredness is persistent or affecting your daily life, talk with your healthcare practitioner to help identify the cause.
Vitamin D is the one with the clearest seasonal rationale, since your skin makes much less of it once the sun drops lower in the sky.3,4,5 Beyond that, fall is less about adding something new and more about staying consistent with the foundations: a daily multivitamin to cover everyday gaps, magnesium, which plays a role in normal muscle and nerve function,6 and omega-3s if you are not eating fish regularly. Some people also look at probiotics or immune support heading into the cooler months. What makes sense depends on your diet, your health history, and anything your healthcare practitioner has flagged, so it is worth a conversation rather than a cart full of guesses.
